Born on January 17 at 11, rue Saint-Denis in Paris.

1816

Baron Gros's Studio

Enters the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros. Meets Charlet, Bonington, Lami and Delaroche.

1822

First Salon

Exhibits The Battle of the Moskova and three campaign scenes at the Paris Salon.

1823

First Lithographs

Begins publishing lithographic collections on the French army.

1824

Salon Medal

Awarded a second-class medal at the Salon of 1824.

1834

Napoleon on his Return from Elba

Masterpiece shown at the Salon. Awarded the Knight's Cross of the Légion d'honneur.

1837

Curator in Rouen

Appointed curator of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen. Settles in Normandy.

1853

Return to Paris

Leaves Rouen and returns to Paris. Begins painting the wars of the Second Empire.

1855

Battle of the Alma

Large canvas depicting the Crimean battle of September 20, 1854.

Taking of Malakhov

Painting of the Crimean campaign, now held at the Musée de Versailles.

Officer of the Légion d'honneur

Promoted to Officer following the success of The Two Friends at the Salon.

Dies in Paris on April 10, 1866. Leaves a body of work of over 250 paintings and 800 lithographs.
